Rahul, Jadeja keep India in dominant position against England

HYDERABAD: KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja helped India dominate the second day’s play during the first Test against England at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Friday.

India were 421/7 at stumps on the second day, leading by 175 runs, with Ravindra Jadeja (81) and Axar Patel (35) on the crease.

The hosts lost Yashasvi Jaiswal earlier in the day as he got caught and bowled by Joe Root after playing a quick knock of 80 runs from 74 balls, laced with ten boundaries and three sixes.

England’s debutant Tom Hartley claimed his first Test wicket when Shubman Gill (23) holed one to the mid-wicket.

Rahul was then joined by Shreyas Iyer (35) in the middle and the pair knitted a 64-run stand for the fourth wicket before Rehan Ahmed sent Iyer back soon after the lunch.

Jadeja joined settled Rahul and they put together a promising 65-run partnership to push India’s total ahead of England’s 246.

Hartley broke the partnership as Rehan Ahmed caught Rahul at deep mid-wicket after the batter had scored 86 runs with the help of eight boundaries and two sixes.

Srikar Bharat joined Jadeja before the tea, with India leading by 42 runs. The pair extended the home side’s lead with their 68-run stand for the sixth wicket.

Bharat, who was the main contributor of the partnership fell prey to Root after scoring 41 runs from 81 balls, laced with three boundaries.

Ravichandran Ashwin was then run out, bringing Axar Patel out in the middle with 358 runs on the board.

Patel and Jadeja put together an unbeaten 63-run stand for the eighth wicket to end the day with a lead of 175 runs.
