Johnson Charles guides Sharjah Warriors to first victory in ILT20

DUBAI: Johnson Charles scored a match-winning 93 in the run chase and steered Sharjah Warriors to a five-wicket victory over home side Dubai Capitals in the fifth match of the International League (ILT20) here on Monday.

Put into bat first, the Capitals registered 170/7 on the board at the back of an illustrious fourth-wicket partnership between Sam Billings and Sikandar Raza.

The home side had a shaky first half to their innings as they were reduced to 51/3 in 8.3 overs after Rahmanullah Gurbaz (15), David Warner (20) and Jake Fraser-McGurk (14) perished cheaply.

Raza then joined Billings in the middle and the pair launched an astounding recovery for the Capitals.

The duo added 81 runs for the fourth wicket before Raza, who was the core aggressor of the stand, was cleaned up by Daniel Sams in the 16th over.

The all-rounder smashed three boundaries and as many sixes on his way to a 23-ball 48.

Billings, on the other hand, carried his bat all the way till the final over and walked back soon after amassing his half-century.

He remained the top-scorer for the Capitals with 52 off 31 deliveries, laced up with one boundary and four sixes.

Sams led the bowling attack for the Warriors with 3/28, followed by Chris Woakes and Maheesh Theekshana, who bagged two wickets each.

In return, the Warriors chased down the 171-run target for the loss of five wickets and as many balls to spare, courtesy of Johnson Charles’s sensational 93-run knock.

The right-handed opener single-handedly kept the scoreboard ticking for the Warriors and batted till the 17th over.
