ICC unveils nominees for Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year Award

DUBAI: The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Friday, announced the nominees for the ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year Award for 2023.

Australian top-order batters Usman Khawaja, and Travis Head were nominated for the Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year 2023 award, along with India’s Ravichandran Ashwin and England’s Joe Root.

Australia’s World Cup final hero Travis Head enjoyed a triumphant year across formats, scoring centuries in the ICC World Test Championship final as well as the ODI World Cup final, against India on both occasions.

Head scored 919 runs in 12 matches at an average of 41.77 during the year, starting with a half-century against South Africa.

His teammate Usman Khawaja enjoyed a stellar year, scoring 1210 in 13 matches at an impressive average of 52.60, with three centuries and six half-centuries.

Khawaja earned a second consecutive Test Cricketer of the Year nomination after ending the year as the only player to breach the 1000-run mark in 2023.

He finished as the highest run-getter in the Ashes (496), as well as the away series against India (333).

The ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year Award for 2021 winner Joe Root also enjoyed a remarkable run this year with 787 runs in eight matches at a staggering average of 65.58 with two centuries and five half-centuries.

Root started the year on high with a memorable series against New Zealand, where he scored three fifty-plus scores, including 153* and 95 in the second Test, which England lost by one run after a thrilling contest.

India’s spin wizard Ravichandran Ashwin earned his third nomination for the ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year Award, after winning the coveted award in 2016.

Ashwin was the third-highest wicket-taker during the year with 41 wickets in seven games at an astonishing average of 17.02, only behind the Australian duo of Nathan Lyon and Pat Cummins.

He helped India in their journey to the ICC World Test Championship final, however, he failed to find a place in the playing XI for the final, which they eventually lost to Australia.
