Aaron Finch voices concern over Australia’s struggling middle order

Australia’s former white-ball captain Aaron Finch has voiced his concern over the nation’s middle-order batting during the recent Test series against touring Pakistan and West Indies.

Australia whitewashed Pakistan 3-0 and drew 1-1 with West Indies after the young Shamar Joseph defied a toe injury to power the Caribbean side to their first victory Down Under since 1997.

However, Aaron Finch believes that bowlers compensated for middle-order batter’s shortcomings to guide Australia to victories.

David Warner and Travis Head are the only Australian batters to score a century in those five matches.

Mitchell Marsh managed to reach the 90s twice and Steve Smith carried his bat for 91 during West Indies’ historic win.

“[I] think the bowlers have been the ones who have got them out of jail a few times, but also Usman Khawaja…and Mitch Marsh is also pulling his weight in that regard,” said Finch.

“They’re not great numbers for a middle order that I think have got some much talent.”

“There’s a few cracks that have been papered over from Usman Khawaja and the bowlers who have done a brilliant job for a long time,” he further added.

He further stressed the fact that only two centuries have been scored, outlining the problem of not converting the good starts into big innings.

“The hundreds column is a concern for me. Guys are getting starts, and that’s reflected in the numbers, it’s not like they’re averaging six,” he concluded.
