Verreynne’s ton in vain as MI Cape Town stun Pretoria Capitals in SA20 run-fest

CENTURION: Kyle Verreynne’s fighting century went in vain as MI Cape Town humbled Pretoria Capitals by 34 runs in the high-scoring SA20 fixture on Thursday.

MI Cape Town captain Kieron Pollard’s decision to bat first, paid dividends for his side as they ran riot to post a mammoth total of 248/4 on the board.

The bottom-ranked side got off to a flying start to their innings, courtesy of a brilliant 64-run partnership between Rassie van der Dussen and Ryan Rickelton.

But Wayne Parnell dismissed van der Dussen in the fifth over to provide a much-needed breakthrough to the Capitals.

MI Cape Town then lost another wicket when Liam Livingstone fell in the 10th over after a cautious 12 off 19.

With the scoreboard reading 87/2 in 9.3 overs Dewald Brevis joined Rickelton in the middle and turned the game on its head.

The pair baton charged on the Capitals bowlers and put together a 64-run partnership off just 27 deliveries.

Both Rickelton and Brevis were looking in complete command until the former faltered and fell victim to Parnell in the 14th over.

Rickelton remained the top-scorer for MI Cape Town with a sensational 90 which came off just 45 deliveries and featured 10 boundaries and five sixes.

Meanwhile, Brevis carried his bat all the way through and powered MI Cape Town to a massive total with his belligerent knock.

He smashed three boundaries and six sixes on his way to an unbeaten 66 off 32 deliveries.

Wayne Parnell bagged three wickets for the Capital while Daryn Dupavillon bagged one.

Chasing a 249-run target, Pretoria Capitals could amass 214/8 in their quota of 20 overs despite Kyle Verreynne’s unbeaten century.

The right-handed batter waged a lone battle for the Capitals with a gutsy 116 not out. His 52-ball featured seven boundaries and nine sixes.

Besides him, Will Jacks (26) and Parnell (23) were the other notable run-getters for the Capitals.

Nuwan Thusara led the bowling attack for MI Cape Town with three wickets while Nealan van Heerden, Pollard and Sam Curran struck out a batter apiece.

The 34-run victory lifted MI Cape Town to fourth in the SA20 standings while Pretoria Capitals sank to the bottom.
