The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Sunday announced a 16-member squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Afghanistan, featuring returning Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
The star batters are set to make their return to the T20I format during the series after a hiatus of more than a year.
They haven’t played the format since India’s semi-final defeat against England in the T20 World Cup in November 2022, prioritizing ODI and Test cricket.
Rohit Sharma will lead the team, while Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav, who captained India in his absence are out with injuries.

Pandya led India in T20I cricket since the T20 World Cup 2022, however, he was ruled out during the ICC World Cup 2023 with an ankle injury, which led to Yadav being named captain.
Yadav and Pandya both are nursing ankle injuries currently and are expected to achieve full fitness prior to the T20 World Cup.
The three-match series against Afghanistan will be India’s last T20I series ahead of the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024, which is scheduled to be played in the USA and West Indies.
Meanwhile, Afghanistan named a 19-member squad for the series, commencing on January 11 in Mohali.
