Usman Khawaja clears initial concussion test

ADELAIDE: Usman Khawaja cleared the initial concussion test as well as scans for a fractured jaw after he suffered a nasty blow on his head from West Indies’ Shamar Joseph during Australia’s ten-wicket win in the Adelaide Test on Friday.

Khawaja was playing at nine with Australia needing with just one run to win when he was hit on the right side of his jaw by debutant Josheph’s bouncer, resulting in him retiring hurt following the consultation by onfield doctors.

He passed the initial concussion test in the dressing room before undergoing scans to check the impact of the blow to his jaw. Cricket Australia later confirmed that he was cleared of both.

However, he will continue to be monitored by the medical staff before going through another concussion test on Saturday to decide his participation in the second Test.

Meanwhile, Australia cruised to the 26-run target in under seven overs to win the match, inspired by a brilliant spell of seam bowling by Josh Hazlewood to dismiss West Indies for 120.

Bowling with almost metronomic precision, Hazlewood ended with 5-35 in the second innings after at one stage having figures of 4-2.
