Bowlers star as Royals edge Capitals to claim first win in SA20 2024

PAARL: A combined bowling effort led home side Paarl Royals to ease past Pretoria Capitals by 27 runs in the third fixture of the ongoing SA20 here at Boland Park on Friday.

Put into bat first, the home side piled up a commendable total of 160/7 on the board, courtesy of David Miller’s 41 in the middle, followed by Andile Phehluwayo’s late onslaught.

Royals’ openers Jason Roy and Jos Buttler gave their side a decent start as they put together 42 runs before both perished in successive overs.

Roy scored 23 in just 16 deliveries while Buttler scored a cautious 14, conceding 16 balls.

Top-order batter Wihan Lubbe had a brief stay at the crease as he survived only 14 deliveries and scored just 11.

The Royals were in a state of bother with the scoreboard reading 56/3 in 8.2 overs.

However, Mitchell Van Buuren partnered strongly with captain David Miller to add vital runs for the team. The pair stitched an anchoring 61-run partnership, which ended in the 16th over when the former perished.

Van Burren scored 28 in 21 balls with the help of one boundary and a six.

Paarl Royals then lost Fabien Allen (5) and their batting mainstay David Miller and consequently slipped to 137/6 in 18 overs.

Miller remained the top-scorer for his team with a 33-ball 41 which featured four boundaries.

The Royals were in dire need of quick runs which were provided by Phehlukwayo, courtesy of his 28-run cameo. The all-rounder faced just 14 deliveries and smashed four boundaries and a six.

Corbin Bosch and Daryn Dupavillon bagged two wickets each for the Capitals while Eathan Bosch, James Neesham and Will Jacks made one scalp each.

Set to chase 161, a tight bowling display from the Royals’ bowlers kept the Capitals at bay and restricted them to 133/7 in 20 overs.

The Capitals had a shaky start to the run chase as they lost their opener Will Jacks (5) in the second over with 18 runs on the board.

Theunis de Bruyn’s (5) also fell cheaply as the visitors slipped to 39/2 in the fifth over.

The best partnership for the Capitals came for the second wicket when opening batter Phil Salt joined forces with Rilee Rossouw and added 39 runs.

However, they both perished in consecutive overs and the Capitals, as a result, slipped to 84/4 in 10.5 overs.

Salt remained the top-scorer for the Capitals with a 31-ball 39, laced up with three boundaries and two sixes while Rossouw scored 29 off 18 deliveries.

The back-to-back dismissals stopped the flow of runs for the Capitals and they eventually succumbed to a 27-run defeat in their SA20 campaign opener.

Andile Phehlukwayo picked up two wickets for the Royals while Wihan Lubbe, Tabraiz Shamsi, Obed McCoy and Lungi Ngidi struck out a batter each.
