Australia crush India in third WT20I to claim series win

MUMBAI: Openers Alyssa Healy and Beth Mooney scored half-centuries after a tight bowling display as Australia thumped India by seven wickets in the third Women’s T20I to win the three-match series 2-1 here at DY Patil Sports Academy on Tuesday.

Put into bat first, India could only raise 147/6 in the allotted 20 overs despite Shafali Verma’s quickfire 26 at the top.

Verma gave India a flying start to their innings as they were 32/0 after the first four overs.

However, Megan Schutt halted India’s progress in the next over as she removed their core aggressor Verma to go past Pakistan captain Nida Dar in the list of most wickets in Women’s T20Is.

She scored 26 off just 17 deliveries with the help of six boundaries.

Smriti Mandhana then put together a one-sided 21-run partnership with Jemimah Rodriguez, who could score a mere seven.

Mandhana also followed her back to the hut after a cautious 28-run knock before their captain Harmanpreet Kaur perished after scoring three.

India, as a result, slipped to 66/4 in the 10th over.

Wicketkeeper batter Richa Ghosh then looked to stabilize the innings with an anchoring knock before walking back to the dugout in the final over.

She top-scored for India with a 28-ball 34 which included two boundaries and three sixes.

Georgia Wareham and Annabel Sutherland bagged two wickets each for Australia while Schutt and Ashleigh Gardner made one scalp each.

Set to chase a modest 148, Australia comfortably knocked the winning runs for the loss of just three wickets and eight balls to spare, courtesy of a magnificent opening partnership.

The opening pair provided a subtle start to Australia by adding 85 runs before Deepti Sharma drew a much-needed breakthrough for India by getting rid of Healy.

Healy scored a brisk 55 in just 38 balls, hitting nine boundaries and a six.

Meanwhile, Mooney stood her ground firm and carried her bat all the way through to power Australia to a series-winning victory.

She scored 52 off 45 balls and smashed five boundaries.

Pooja Vastrakar led the bowling attack for India with 2/26 while Sharma made one scalp.
