Winfield’s ton scripts perfect victory for Barmy Army over Tornadoes

KOWLOON: Barmy Army captain Lauren Winfield-Hill’s magnificent century guided her side to a perfect 10-wicket victory over Tornadoes Women in the ninth fixture of the ongoing FairBreak Invitational.

Set to chase 161, Barmy Army openers completely outclassed Tornadoes’ bowlers as the pair dominantly sealed a resounding 10-wicket victory for their side with 26 balls to spare.

Winfield-Hill was the core aggressor of the astonishing partnership as she scored a quickfire century in just 56 balls on her way to an unbeaten 120.

The right-handed batter faced 67 deliveries amid his magnificent knock and smoked 17 boundaries and five sixes.

Her opening partner Laura Wolvaardt was also brilliant and batted sensibly for a 31-ball 40 while Winfield-Hill was dominating Tornadoes’ bowlers.

Put into bat first, Tornadoes accumulated 160/4 in their allotted 20 overs despite a dismal start to their innings.

The Tornadoes lost their top three batters – Sterre Kalis (3), Dane van Niekerk (17), and Stefanie Taylor (5) – cheaply and were three down for 33 in the sixth over.

Following the slump, Sune Luus and Natasha Miles stitched a valiant partnership for the fourth wicket and scripted an astounding recovery for their side.

The pair appeared solid and confident to carry their bat but a run out in the 17th over marked the end of Miles’s cautious knock of a 45-ball 40.

Luus, however, continued her domination over the Barmy Army bowlers and remained unbeaten with a fighting 65 off 43 deliveries, laced with six boundaries and three sixes.

For Barmy Army, only Fatima Sana and Tara Norris could pick up a wicket.
